Artists statement:
This mural, painted in September 1986, by Moira Gillis (now Gray), is an homage to Piet Mondrian's famous style of painting in shapes and lines. Although he used mainly primary and secondary colors along with black, white and gray, Moira enlivened the style by adding circular shapes and bright colors.
The mural was an assignment for the third graphic design class, taught by Herb Paston in the 1980s. It was one of two entries submitted by the artist.
It can get claustrophobic when climbing the dark stairs of the tower library. The artist's goal was to fill the space with color and to create a break for the seemingly endless concrete. There is no other goal of the painting than to create a happy feeling in the viewers mind when they come across this mural on their way up or down the stairs.
